Do you ever wonder how easy is to make gyro at home? This traditional Greek street food is such a comforting meal and also a great way to gather the family around the table. You can have a “gyro buffet night” where you set up all the ingredients and let your kids explore and assemble their own gyro sandwich. Trust me your family will love it and did I mention that it is so easy to make this meal? So without any further ado, let me show you how to make the easiest chicken gyro sandwich!
The tzatziki sauce
Tzatziki is a yogurt based sauce which is served usually along with grilled meat, pita and vegetables. It is very easy to make tzatziki and you will only need a couple of simple ingredients. Just mix all the ingredients together and store in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
The only tip that you need to know to make a successful tzatziki sauce is to drain the cucumber. Just shred the cucumber and drain with your hands the excess liquid from the cucumber.
1 cup plan full-fat Greek yogurt
1/2 cucumber, shredded and drained
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp fresh dill, minced
The pita bread
Making your own pita bread is so easy and it is much better than the store bough as they don’t contain any sugars and preservatives. For the pita bread I used my pizza dough recipe. This makes four regular sized pita. I just divide the dough in four pieces, dust your surface and roll with your rolling pin. Then heat up your pan with a drizzle of olive oil and cook your pita one at the time. It only takes a couple of minutes per side.
Traditionally the gyro sandwich is made with French fries. In my take on this traditional Greek dish, I decided to oven bake the potatoes. I cut the potatoes in strips and place them in a sheet pan tray covered with parchment paper. Make sure that you pat dry the potatoes with a paper towel to help the potatoes crisp up. Then I drizzled with olive oil, pepper and oregano and mix well. Just bake at 400F (204.44 degrees Celsius) until crispy golden!
In Greece, the only vegetables that you will find in a gyro sandwich are tomatoes and onions. I know that in the Americanized version you will find also lettuce and cucumber but this is not traditional.
How to prepare and store
You can prepare all the elements(tzatziki, pita bread and marinated chicken) of the easiest chicken gyro sandwich from the day before and store in the fridge. However, I would recommend to marinate the chicken gyro over night and cook it just before you serve the gyro sandwich. The gyro will be crispier and more tender.

- Chicken gyro
2.5 lbs (1.13 kilograms) boneless and skinless chicken thighs
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tbsp oregano
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp turmeric
zest of one lemon
juice of 1/2 lemon
pepper to taste
- Cut the chicken in stripes
- In a mixing bowl mix all the ingredients to incorporate well
